1970年代，巴西的里约热内卢，当时入室盗窃非常严重，所以有钱人就开始建围墙。过去城市是没有围墙的。一开始建矮围墙，小偷可以直接翻墙而过，然后又建高围墙，小偷就架个梯子，仍然可以翻墙而过，然后就把围墙建得更高，小偷用更高的梯子。
最后的结果是什么呢？就是当这个豪宅周围的围墙高到“里面不知道外面发生什么，外面也不知道里面发生什么”的时候，小偷进到屋子以后就可以做任何他想做的事情。不少富豪不仅仅家里被洗劫一空，有的人甚至连命都丢掉了。
