超加工食品（UPF）对健康有不利影响，可能会导致肥胖。但根据发表在《Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology》期刊上的一项研究，消费超加工食品带来的不利影响可能比以前认为的更多，会增加心血管疾病、痴呆症和结肠癌的风险。研究发现，1990 年后出生的人比 1970 年以前出生的人更有可能在 50 岁之前患上癌症，超加工食品可能是导致这一结果的风险因素。除新鲜水果和蔬菜外，几乎所有食品都经过某种程度的加工。超加工食品中的蛋白质和纤维含量较低，盐、糖和脂肪含量较高，经过挤压、成型和研磨等程序。
